BQ · Bournemouth Questionnaire

7 items · 3 min · 0–70 · lower is better

1 Before you use it

What it is

Seven items covering pain, function, social activity, anxiety, depression, fear-avoidance and work — a deliberately biopsychosocial short form, with neck and low back versions.

Its selling point is that it samples all the domains in the time a single-domain questionnaire takes.

When to reach for it

When you want one short questionnaire rather than three. Useful on a busy placement list where the realistic choice is between this and nothing.

2 Giving it

Scoring

Seven items, 0–10 each, summed to 0–70. Higher means worse. Report the subscale items as well as the total — that is where the information is.

What it doesn’t measure

Depth in any single domain. One item per construct is a screen, not a measurement. If anxiety or fear-avoidance is the finding, follow it with the instrument built for it.

3 Reading the score

Interpreting it

Interpret against baseline.

Read item by item. A total of 35 driven by anxiety and fear-avoidance is a different plan from a total of 35 driven by pain and function.

Is the change real?

MDC 3.0 points on the neck version. Compare the change against this patient's own baseline as well as the figure. SourceMeasured in neck pain.

Student trap. Reporting only the total. One number across seven domains hides the thing you were trying to find.

Official source: null. We don't host the form.

This is a learning tool. It does not diagnose patients and does not replace your clinical educator.
