1 Before you use it
What it is
Five dimensions — mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/discomfort, anxiety/depression — plus a 0–100 health VAS. Three minutes.
The generic health measure of choice, and the green-ish substitute for SF-36 and SF-12.
When to reach for it
When you need generic health status — health-economic reporting, service evaluation, or comparing across conditions. Less useful as a clinical outcome than a condition-specific measure.

Scoring
Each dimension rated on 3 (EQ-5D-3L) or 5 (EQ-5D-5L) levels, producing a profile such as 21132, which converts to a single utility index via country-specific value sets — including an Australian one. Plus the VAS.
Report the profile and the VAS. The index needs the right value set.
What it doesn’t measure
Anything region-specific. It will not detect the change your shoulder or knee programme produces.
3 Reading the score
Interpreting it
The anxiety/depression dimension is a single item and is a flag, not an assessment.
Is the change real?
Student trap. Quoting an index value without saying which country's value set produced it. The same profile gives different numbers in different countries.

This is a learning tool. It does not diagnose patients and does not replace your clinical educator.
