1 Before you use it

What it is

Twenty items covering physical function, work status, and symptom severity — pain, fatigue, morning tiredness, stiffness, anxiety and depression — over the past week.

When to reach for it

Widespread pain presentations where a fibromyalgia diagnosis has been made or is being considered by the treating team.

Patterns it serves · 1

2 Giving it

Scoring

Items normalised and summed to 0–100. Higher means greater impact.

What it doesn’t measure

Diagnose fibromyalgia — that is the WPI and Symptom Severity Scale criteria, and it is a medical diagnosis.

3 Reading the score

Interpreting it

Use the revised version (FIQR) where you can — its scoring is cleaner.

Is the change real?

No verified MCID or MDC is carried in our library for this measure, so the number on its own cannot tell you a change is real. Compare it to this patient's own baseline and say what changed functionally.

Student trap. Using it as a diagnostic instrument. It measures impact in people who already have the diagnosis.

This is a learning tool. It does not diagnose patients and does not replace your clinical educator.
