Godin · Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire

3 items · 2 min · Leisure score index (arbitrary units) · higher is better

1 Before you use it

What it is

Three questions: in a typical week, how many times do you do strenuous, moderate and mild exercise for more than 15 minutes?

Two minutes, three numbers, and it gives you a physical activity baseline that most assessments never take.

When to reach for it

Osteoarthritis, persistent pain and any presentation where physical activity is part of the plan — which is most of them.

Baseline it before you prescribe exercise, or you have no idea whether you're adding to a lot or a little.

2 Giving it

Scoring

Weighted: strenuous ×9, moderate ×5, mild ×3, summed to a leisure score index. Higher means more activity.

What it doesn’t measure

Occupational or incidental activity, or intensity beyond self-report.

3 Reading the score

Interpreting it

**Commonly banded as active, moderately active and insufficiently active.

Is the change real?

No verified MCID or MDC is carried in our library for this measure, so the number on its own cannot tell you a change is real. Compare it to this patient's own baseline and say what changed functionally.

Student trap. Prescribing exercise without a baseline. Three questions and you know whether you're adding 10% or doubling it.
