IPAQ · International Physical Activity Questionnaire

8 min · MET-minutes per week · higher is better

1 Before you use it

What it is

Physical activity across work, transport, domestic and leisure domains, over the last seven days. Long and short forms exist.

More comprehensive than Godin and considerably more burdensome.

When to reach for it

When you need activity across all domains, not just leisure. For routine placement use, Godin is faster and usually enough.

2 Giving it

Scoring

Converted to MET-minutes per week and banded low, moderate and high. The scoring protocol includes truncation rules — follow them or the numbers inflate.

What it doesn’t measure

Measure activity objectively. A wearable does that.

3 Reading the score

Interpreting it

Known to over-report relative to device-measured activity — treat it as a category, not a precise figure.

Is the change real?

MDC 2132 MET-minutes per week at 90% confidence. Compare the change against this patient's own baseline as well as the figure. Source

Student trap. Reporting MET-minutes to three significant figures. It's a self-report category, not a measurement.

This is a learning tool. It does not diagnose patients and does not replace your clinical educator.
