1 Before you use it
What it is
Twenty visual-analogue items covering pain intensity, its effect on function, its emotional dimension and its behaviour over time. Broader than the NDI, and longer.
When to reach for it
When you want a broader picture than the NDI gives and the patient will tolerate 20 items. Persistent neck pain more often than acute.
2 Giving it
Scoring
Twenty items, each 0–5 on a visual analogue format, summed to 0–100. Higher means more disability.
What it doesn’t measure
It is still a self-report disability measure — no impairment, no physical findings.
3 Reading the score
Interpreting it
Interpret against baseline.
Its breadth is the point — it deliberately samples the emotional and temporal dimensions the NDI leaves out.
Is the change real?
Student trap. Handing a 20-item VAS questionnaire to someone in an acute, highly irritable episode. Match the burden to the presentation.
Official source: null. We don't host the form.
This is a learning tool. It does not diagnose patients and does not replace your clinical educator.
