NPIS · Norwich Patellar Instability Score

19 items · 6 min · 0–100 · lower is better

1 Before you use it

What it is

An alternative to BPII 2.0 for patellar instability, asking how often the patella feels unstable across a list of specific activities and positions.

Its structure is activity-by-activity, which some clinicians find more directly translatable into a programme.

When to reach for it

Patellar instability, as the BPII alternative. Pick one and stay with it.

2 Giving it

Scoring

Items rated for frequency of instability across activities, converted to 0–100. Higher means more instability. Note the direction is the opposite of BPII.

What it doesn’t measure

Anatomical risk factors, strength, or psychological readiness in the way BPII's emotional domain does.

3 Reading the score

Interpreting it

Interpret against baseline.

Is the change real?

No verified MCID or MDC is carried in our library for this measure, so the number on its own cannot tell you a change is real. Compare it to this patient's own baseline and say what changed functionally.

Student trap. Switching between NPIS and BPII mid-episode. They run in opposite directions.
