1 Before you use it
What it is
The VISA questionnaire for proximal hamstring tendinopathy. Eight items covering pain with sitting, stretching, running, sprinting and sport participation.
Sitting is the defining item — this is the tendinopathy that hurts on a hard chair and in the drive to work.
When to reach for it
Proximal hamstring tendinopathy, at baseline and through loading progression.
Patterns it serves · 1
2 Giving it
Scoring
Eight items to 0–100. Higher is better.
What it doesn’t measure
Hamstring strength and length, and it doesn't distinguish tendinopathy from a deep gluteal or referred lumbar source.
Repeat it
3 Reading the score
Interpreting it
Interpret against baseline.
Is the change real?
On placement
Proximal hamstring tendinopathy, 6 weeks of isometric-to-heavy-slow loading. VISA-H 48 at intake, 57 today; sitting tolerance 10 → 25 minutes.
Read it as 9 points up, over the 5.96-point MDC (measured in proximal hamstring tendinopathy). Real. No MCID in the library — the sitting-tolerance asterisk is the number the patient cares about.
Do keep re-testing the minutes of sitting as the asterisk sign, and progress the loading on that response.
Student trap. Not asking about sitting tolerance in minutes. The questionnaire captures it, but the number of minutes is the asterisk you'll re-test.
This is a learning tool. It does not diagnose patients and does not replace your clinical educator.
