WAI · Work Ability Index

7 items · 5 min · 7–49 · higher is better

1 Before you use it

What it is

Seven dimensions of work ability — current ability compared with lifetime best, ability relative to job demands, number of diagnosed conditions, estimated impairment at work, sick leave, own prognosis, and mental resources.

A single-item version (WAS) exists and captures much of it in one question.

When to reach for it

Work-related musculoskeletal presentations and return-to-work planning.

2 Giving it

Scoring

Seven items weighted to 7–49, banded poor / moderate / good / excellent. Higher is better.

What it doesn’t measure

Symptoms, function or fear-avoidance. Pair with FABQ-W where beliefs about work are the issue.

3 Reading the score

Interpreting it

Item one — current work ability compared with your lifetime best, 0 to 10 — is worth asking on its own even if you never score the rest.

Is the change real?

No verified MCID or MDC is carried in our library for this measure, so the number on its own cannot tell you a change is real. Compare it to this patient's own baseline and say what changed functionally.

Student trap. Skipping it because the patient is off work. That's exactly when it's informative.

This is a learning tool. It does not diagnose patients and does not replace your clinical educator.
