FHSQ · Foot Health Status Questionnaire

6 min · 0–100 per domain · higher is better

1 Before you use it

What it is

A general foot-health measure covering foot pain, foot function, footwear and general foot health, plus a general-health section.

An Australian-developed instrument, which is worth knowing given how few of these are.

When to reach for it

Forefoot and general foot presentations without a dedicated instrument — plantar fasciopathy, metatarsalgia, hallux valgus, hallux rigidus, Morton's neuroma, Freiberg's.

These are exactly the patterns with no condition-specific PROM, and this covers them.

2 Giving it

Scoring

Domains scored 0–100 separately. Higher is better. Report the four foot domains.

What it doesn’t measure

Ankle function — use FAAM. And it doesn't measure foot posture — that's the FPI.

Repeat it

Intake, 8 weeks, 16 weeks. This is a slow condition; monthly scoring shows noise, not progress.

3 Reading the score

Interpreting it

Interpret against baseline.

The footwear domain is the useful one clinically — it is often the cheapest thing you can change and the last thing anyone asks about.

Is the change real?

MCID 14.1 points in the pain domain. Compare the change against this patient's own baseline as well as the figure. SourceMeasured in plantar heel pain.

On placement

Plantar heel pain, 8 weeks of load management and calf and plantar fascia work. FHSQ pain domain 38 → 55; function domain 52 → 60.

Read it as pain domain up 17 points, clearing the 14.1-point MCID (measured in plantar heel pain). Function is up 8, and the library carries no verified figure for that domain, so read it as direction only.

Do ask about the footwear domain before you plan the next block — it is the cheapest thing to change and the least often asked about.

Student trap. Skipping the footwear domain. On a forefoot page, footwear is usually the highest-yield intervention you have.
