FIHOA · Functional Index for Hand Osteoarthritis

10 items · 3 min · 0–30 · lower is better

1 Before you use it

What it is

Ten everyday hand tasks — turning a key, cutting meat, holding a bottle, buttoning, writing, opening a jar. Three minutes, no licence.

The green substitute for AUSCAN.

When to reach for it

First CMC osteoarthritis and hand OA generally, at baseline and at the 8–12 week decision point.

2 Giving it

Scoring

Each item 0–3, summed to 0–30. Higher means worse function.

What it doesn’t measure

Pain intensity, grip or pinch strength. Pair with the NPRS and pinch dynamometry — pinch is the outcome the patient feels on the thumb-base page.

3 Reading the score

Interpreting it

Interpret against baseline.

The items are the treatment plan. Every task on the list has an adaptive-equipment or joint-protection answer, which is the highest-yield part of thumb-base OA management.

Is the change real?

No verified MCID or MDC is carried in our library for this measure, so the number on its own cannot tell you a change is real. Compare it to this patient's own baseline and say what changed functionally.

Student trap. Scoring it and not acting on it. Ten named tasks, ten adaptive answers — that's the session.

Official source: null. We don't host the form.

This is a learning tool. It does not diagnose patients and does not replace your clinical educator.
