SF-MPQ-2 · Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire-2

22 items · 6 min · 0–10 per item; four subscale means · lower is better

1 Before you use it

What it is

The revised McGill, expanded to cover neuropathic pain. Twenty-two descriptors across four subscales — continuous pain, intermittent pain, neuropathic pain, and affective descriptors.

When to reach for it

Mixed or complex pain presentations, especially where a neuropathic component is suspected and you want descriptor-level detail.

2 Giving it

Scoring

Each descriptor 0–10; report the four subscale means and a total mean. Higher means worse.

What it doesn’t measure

Function or interference.

3 Reading the score

Interpreting it

The neuropathic subscale gives you a quality-based signal alongside a formal screen like painDETECT or DN4.

Is the change real?

MDC 1.2 points on the total score for one patient, 0.3 for a group mean. Compare the change against this patient's own baseline as well as the figure. SourceMeasured in chronic pain.

Student trap. Using it interchangeably with the original SF-MPQ. Different item set, different subscales, different scale.
