MHQ · Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire

37 items · 15 min · 0–100 per domain · higher is better

Licensed — we carry the score, never the form

1 Before you use it

What it is

Metadata only. Thirty-seven items across six domains — overall hand function, activities of daily living, work performance, pain, aesthetics, and satisfaction — scored separately for each hand.

The aesthetics and satisfaction domains are unusual and matter in hand surgery, which is where you'll see it.

When to reach for it

When a hand surgeon's letter quotes it. For your own baseline use the PRWE.

2 Giving it

Scoring

Six domains, each normalised 0–100. Higher is better for every domain except pain, where higher means more pain — a genuine trap when reading a report.

What it doesn’t measure

Range, grip or pinch.

3 Reading the score

Interpreting it

Is the change real?

MCID 9.3 points on the total score (7.7 to 10.9 across methods). Compare the change against this patient's own baseline as well as the figure. SourceMeasured in hand conditions.

Student trap. Reading the pain domain in the same direction as the others. Five domains go up when things improve; pain goes the other way.

Use instead: PRWE — same construct, no licence.

This is a learning tool. It does not diagnose patients and does not replace your clinical educator.
