S-LANSS · Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs

7 items · 4 min · 0–24 · lower is better

1 Before you use it

What it is

A fully self-report neuropathic screen — the self-completed version of LANSS, with no examination component. Seven weighted items covering dysaesthesia, autonomic changes, evoked pain, paroxysmal pain and thermal descriptors.

When to reach for it

Radiating limb pain and suspected nerve involvement, particularly for postal or remote completion.

2 Giving it

Scoring

Weighted items totalling 0–24. A score of 12 or more is the conventional threshold. No verified accuracy figure is carried in our library and none is printed here.

What it doesn’t measure

Localise the lesion or replace the neurological examination.

3 Reading the score

Interpreting it

A screen, not a diagnosis.

Choose it over DN4 when the questionnaire needs to go home with the patient or be completed remotely; choose DN4 when you want the examination items.

Is the change real?

No verified MCID or MDC is carried in our library for this measure, so the number on its own cannot tell you a change is real. Compare it to this patient's own baseline and say what changed functionally.

Student trap. Running painDETECT, DN4 and S-LANSS on the same patient. Pick one screen for the service.

This is a learning tool. It does not diagnose patients and does not replace your clinical educator.
