SF-36 · 36-Item Short Form Health Survey

36 items · 10 min · 0–100 per domain (8 domains) · higher is better

Licensed — we carry the score, never the form

1 Before you use it

What it is

Metadata only. Thirty-six items across eight domains — physical functioning, role-physical, bodily pain, general health, vitality, social functioning, role-emotional, mental health — plus physical and mental component summaries.

When to reach for it

When you encounter it in the literature or a service's existing dataset. It has no routine role in a five-week MSK placement.

2 Giving it

Scoring

Eight domains, each 0–100, plus two component summaries. Higher is better. Scoring requires the published algorithm.

What it doesn’t measure

Anything region-specific or responsive to a musculoskeletal intervention.

3 Reading the score

Interpreting it

Is the change real?

MDC 19% to 45% of the scale depending on the subscale, which makes it a blunt instrument for one patient. Compare the change against this patient's own baseline as well as the figure. SourceMeasured in an older balance-impaired cohort.

Student trap. Adding it to a caseload assessment 'for completeness'. Ten minutes of patient time for something that won't move with your treatment.

This is a learning tool. It does not diagnose patients and does not replace your clinical educator.
