AUSCAN · Australian/Canadian Osteoarthritis Hand Index

15 items · 5 min · Varies by version · lower is better

Licensed — we carry the score, never the form

1 Before you use it

What it is

Metadata only. Fifteen items across three subscales — pain, stiffness and physical function — for hand osteoarthritis. The hand equivalent of WOMAC, from the same author.

When to reach for it

When it appears in rheumatology correspondence or a trial report. For your own baseline use FIHOA.

2 Giving it

Scoring

Three subscales reported separately; both Likert and visual-analogue formats exist with different ranges. Check which version a report is quoting.

What it doesn’t measure

Grip or pinch strength.

3 Reading the score

Interpreting it

Is the change real?

MCID 4 points of decline on the physical function scale over a year. Compare the change against this patient's own baseline as well as the figure. SourceMeasured in hand osteoarthritis.

Student trap. Assuming a Likert AUSCAN and a VAS AUSCAN are the same scale. They aren't.

Licensed through womac.com. We don't host the form.

Use instead: FIHOA — same construct, no licence.

This is a learning tool. It does not diagnose patients and does not replace your clinical educator.
