NAHS · Non-Arthritic Hip Score

20 items · 6 min · 0–100 · higher is better

1 Before you use it

What it is

Built for the pre-arthritic hip — mechanical symptoms, pain, function and activity level in a patient whose hip hurts but whose x-ray is unremarkable.

When to reach for it

Young hips with mechanical symptoms — catching, clicking, giving way — where FAI, labral pathology or snapping hip is on the list. An alternative to HOS and iHOT.

2 Giving it

Scoring

Twenty items across four domains, converted to 0–100. Higher is better.

What it doesn’t measure

Groin-specific demand, or hip OA — use HAGOS and HOOS respectively.

3 Reading the score

Interpreting it

Interpret against baseline.

Is the change real?

MCID 8.5 points. Compare the change against this patient's own baseline as well as the figure. SourceMeasured in a hip arthroscopy cohort.

Student trap. Choosing between HOS, iHOT and NAHS at random. Pick one for the service and be consistent — they don't convert.

Official source: preventivehip.org. We don't host the form.

This is a learning tool. It does not diagnose patients and does not replace your clinical educator.
